After last year hurricane season and the Cyclone that had already hit Ottawa last month I thought that i should get ready now this year ...
What I have learned last year that could help ... if they annouce power outage : fill tub and sink with fresh water and kettles ... have plenty of garbage bags for wastes if the toilet do not flush ... have some form of way to boil water even if there is running water as it might not be as best to drink without boiling or stack on water bottles ... be careful of pressured fuel as it might explode with the pressure during a cyclone or hurricane ... best is a emergency "camp heat" type or maybe a hibachi if you have a garage not to intoxicate with the fumes ... and cans food and poder milk etc ... the frig will be out if the power gets down so a cooler maybe ... matches ... plastic puncho overalls pants that cover the feet or big garbage bags so not to be electrocuted of there is fload ... flashlight or a old tyme oil lamp that runs on wicks safer then candles ... some form of window tick cover, or styrofoam sheet for windows in the room you will use to prevent they blow out ... plastic container jugs to empty water ... ear plugs ... an inflatable boat you can use to escape from the window if the water raise that much that cars can't drive or other land transport to rescue you ... can also be used to hide under and not be electrocuted ... suggested to climb to the roof if needed if there is no other places because of the level of water so an escape way to climb to the roof ... hurricane winds can turn car upside down and debris or other bicycles or cars or trees can fly everywhere and even roof so if there is no fload best is to be in the basement or at least not exposed outside or by a tree ... find a place to hide in case things fly in the air ... floads can raise up to 3 storey high in hours mostly if close to a shore ... make yourself used to the terms of levels as it means the impact and danger it can makes and so the preparedness to take example is hurricane level and tropical storm or cyclone are type of natural danger but also categorise in force ... print or study the different type and check the warnings if they annouce tropical Storm level 1 to 5 = even 1 is more then the stronger winds experience here in Canada normally , after there is hurricane level 1 to 5 and then cyclone 1 to 5 ... it will say what it can affect in force for each level of warning ... a website best is Environment Canada where you can chech water waves and tides height, ices warnings, levels of storms, all the differents areas in the province and country, and warnings in advance ... cyclones are unpredicatbles as they turn and change route so keep checking ...
